Purpose
Sanitarian services ensure sanitary conditions in public places which include:
- Bars
- Daycare centers
- Nursing homes
- Public swimming pools
- Restaurants
- Schools
- Other institutions
On private premises, the Sanitarian section permits and inspects individual wastewater treatment systems.

Wastewater Treatment Plants
Troubleshooting a Treatment Plant
If you need to install a wastewater treatment plant, contact a Sanitarian at 504-934-6690 or email the Health Department. You can also view the Troubleshooting a Treatment Plan document (PDF). You may have to complete a permit application.
Installation
Installations of wastewater treatment plants must be installed by a Louisiana state licensed installer. List of Louisiana State Licensed Installers.
Complaints
To file a complaint regarding sewage and wastewater, complete a public request.
Retail Food Establishments
If you are interested in opening an establishment that will be preparing and selling food, please visit this website to complete a questionnaire. This questionnaire must be completed in its entirety and sent to a Sanitarian here at the Health Department: plans review questionnaire.
All establishments which sell food must have an employee successfully complete a food safety course. A list of DHH/OPH approved food safety vendors are available online through food safety certification application.
