SHELTERS:
In the event of a major storm, NO shelters will be available in Plaquemines Parish. This is for two reasons: (1) Limited resources and damage due to Katrina, and (2) It is simply not safe. Parish officials are working on an agreement with other parishes well north of Plaquemines to offer shelters out of harm’s way. Once the agreements are completed and/or if a storm threatens, information will be made available on the location and specifics of shelters for Plaquemines residents.
TRANSPORTATION:
As has been the case in past storms, transportation will be provided out of the parish to those without their own transportation, but only during a Mandatory Evacuation. Once the evacuation has been ordered, the parish’s Community Action Division and its four vans will begin traversing all Plaquemines streets to pick up anyone needing assistance. The entire parish will be covered and some streets will be swept more than once to ensure that everyone is evacuated. Once residents are picked up, they will be delivered to staging areas (to be determined at a later date). Plaquemines Parish is fortunate once again to have the cooperation of the school system that will provide buses to take residents from staging areas to the Belle Chasse Auditorium. Note - The Auditorium is not a shelter. It is simply a staging area from which residents will be registered and then transported out of harm’s way to fully operational shelters well out of the area. Transports will continue up until 24 hours before landfall.
If you need a ride call: 504-297-5000 (parish switchboard), or the Sheriff’s Department’s Storm Line: 1-800-937-1072
WHAT TO BRING:
Please bring only what you can carry. What you bring must be stored on your lap and/or at your feet. Pets are allowed, but must be caged. Bring enough clothing, medicine, etc for several days.
Again, transportation out of the parish will only be provided when a Mandatory Evacuation is ordered.

Note about Nursing Homes: If you or a loved one resides in a nursing home, note that state law requires all such facilities to have their own evacuation plans. For more information, contact the nursing home and ask about the plan and what arrangements you and your loved ones should make to accommodate the plan.
